Image editing and viewer programs usually have their own thumbnail browser. I use Irfanview .. and the last time I looked - it worked well in Vista. Just a wild guess .. turn off the thumbnails .. play w awhile .. reboot and turn the thumbnails back on. Seems like this is a common problem in Vista .. Maybe some more googling might help.

I'm sure that the database can be deleted after you view the image. But you should avoid FastStone for other reasons like it being proprietary freeware. If your only concern is the image viewer building a database, MS Paint (I'm being serious) would be a good enough alternative. From what I remember, Paint doesn't build a database.
